XXV IOF General Assembly in Trondheim

Posted on | August 14, 2010 | Category: News

The XXV IOF General Assembly was held on 13 August 2010 in conjunction with the World Orienteering Championships in Trondheim, Norway.

Appointments of organisers

The General Assembly appointed Italy organiser of the World Orienteering Championships and World Trail Orienteering Championships 2014. The events will be held in the Asiago-Lavarone highlands in Northern Italy.

Estonia was appointed organiser of the World Mountain Bike Orienteering Championships 2013.

Barbados new IOF member

The General Assembly also endorsed Council’s decision to approve Barbados as full member. The IOF now has 71 member federations.

One membership class

The delegates approved the proposed amendments to the IOF Statutes, which means that the IOF now only has one membership class. Current associate members will first become provisional members. Provisional membership status may only be held for a limited period. The rights of a provisional member are the same as those of a member except for the fact that a provisional member may not vote at the General Assembly, nor nominate candidates to Council. This means that all IOF member federations are from now on allowed to participate in all IOF Events, including the World Orienteering Championships.

Mass start to be introduced in World Orienteering Championships

The Council presented a report on future directions for World Orienteering Championships (WOC). The three guiding principles are that the WOC programme should diversify, the WOC week should remain within 8 days, and a new, mixed, relay should be introduced. After the report, the General Assembly decided to introduce a mass start into World Orienteering Championships. The Council will now continue to develop a detailed programme, including in which format the mass start will be introduced.

Continued support for strong IOF participation in World Masters Games

Orienteering is currently included in the programmes of the World Games and the World Masters Games. The presence of the IOF in these two multi-sport Games has improved credibility and recognition for orienteering on the world sporting stage. The General Assembly confirmed the current policy of organising the World Masters Orienteering Championships in conjunction with the World Masters Games every fourth year.

Mediterranean co-operation

The Mediterranean federations informed the General Assembly that they will establish a Confederation of Orienteering Federations of the Mediterranean Sea, and the General Assembly agreed to recognise it.

Budget and Activity Plan

The delegates approved the IOF membership fees and budget for 2011-2012, and the Activity Plan for the Congress period 2010-2012.

Åke Jacobson re-elected IOF President

Åke Jacobson (SWE) was re-elected President of the International Orienteering Federation for the Congress period 2010-2012. Leho Haldna (EST), Brian Porteous (GBR) and Marcel Schiess (SUI) were elected Vice Presidents.
