After the first qualication races at the European Championships Judith Wyder started to perform very well. At the end, the Swiss became the most successful athlete of the Championships in Portugal.

“It has been an incredible week”, she smiles.

In the relay she was again on the top of the podium. Julia Gross and Sabine Hauswirth had the two other legs and also ran very well. Before the relay they talked about doing well – not about taking gold. For Judith it was the third gold of these Championships. She won also the sprint and the long distance.

In her former orienteering life Judith used to be bit “up and down”. At EOC she really impressed a lot. After the qualifications she found the right mood. “I got the time to take it a bit slower if I felt unsure”, she says.  The new Swiss phantom has since March exercised sport full time and she will continue with that until August.  “Then I will start working again. I like to do that besides orienteering. It is not easy to live only of sport”, she says.  Before the 25-year-old athlete became full time orienteer she worked 80 percentas a physiotherapist.

What is your goal for the World Championships now?

“A medal and diplomas.”

Which distances will you run?

“We have to see the team selection first, but after the gold on Tuesday I have a free place on the long distance.”

And the sprint?

“No, there is no free place for winning that at the EOC, but sprint is also a distance I hope to take part in.”
