World Trail Orienteering Championships Day 1: Familiar names on top

Posted on | June 9, 2012 | Category: News

After Day 1 in the sand dune terrain in Scotland, there are some familiar names on top of the results lists of the World Trail Orienteering Championships 2012. In the open class it is Finland’s Antti Rusanen, last year’s silver medallist, who leads before Stig Gerdtman, Sweden, World Champion from 2010. On the third spot there is a new name, a young competitor from the USA: Richard Y. Ebright. The top trio has equal points, but Rusanen has been faster on the timed controls.

Paralympic class is led by Ola Jansson, Sweden, who just won the European Championships on home ground a couple of weeks ago. But the game is still open: reigning World Champion Dmitry Kucherenko is on second place with equal points with Jansson, but with a longer time as he made a mistake on one timed control. On third place is Pekka Seppä, Finland. He has one point less than Jansson and Kucherenko, but remarkably he has been 23 seconds faster than Jansson on the timed controls. Should Jansson and Kucherenko make one mistake more than Seppä today, it is the time from the timed controls that decides the winner.

The final competition, Day 2, will take place today. For more information, please visit the organiser’s website.
