World Orienteering Championships: Khramov knows how to sprint

Posted on | August 20, 2009 | Category: News

Two intensely exciting sprint finals around the zoo and woodlands west of Miskolc ended with victories for Helena Jansson, Sweden and Andrey Khramov, Russia, both by substantial margins.

Andrey Khramov really knows how to sprint. Last year he won sprint gold at the World Championships in Czech Republic, and just a month ago he was unbeatable at The World Games sprint in Chinese Taipei. Today he got the gold with a winning margin of 26 seconds – so there was no one even close to beat him. The young Swiss runner Fabian Hertner took the silver medal in the mens race, and Daniel Hubmann, Switzerland, got bronze. There was great Bulgarian jubilation for a 6th place for Kiril Nikolov.

In the women’s race the day was Swedish. Helena Jansson ran to a clear victory before her compatriot LInnea Gustafsson. Third place and bronze medal went to the irrepressible Simone Niggli, Switzerland.

The first part of the sprint courses proved very tricky with a complex map and interesting route choices in the zoo. The last part of the course was very runnable.

Tomorrow the relay race will take place at the arena used at the middle distance. Mens race starts at 11:00 and the womens at 13:45. Follow it in text, sound and results, plus video and tracking, on-line on the WOC website,
