World MTBO Championships: Finnish success at Middle distance

Posted on | August 22, 2012 | Category: News

Finland took three medals in today’s Middle distance race, including a gold medal for IOF World Rankings leader Samuli Saarela. Ursina Jäggi, Switzerland was the surprise winner of the women’s race by almost a minute.

Ursina Jäggi, competing in her fourth World Championships and world-ranked number 15, hugely surpassed anything she has achieved before at international level, winning by 55 seconds over the vastly experienced Finn Ingrid Stengård in the tricky karst terrain in mid-Hungary. The bronze medal went to the rapidly-improving Dane Nina Hoffmann.

Samuli Saarela started strongly today and had a fine ride to win by 53 seconds. Silver medallist was Anton Foliforov, Russia and two bronze medals will be awarded, with Samuel Pökälä, Finland and Jan Suoboda, Czech Republic having the same time.

Just as yesterday in the Sprint, eight nations were represented amongst the podium placings. Three riders – Gaëlle Barlet, France, Ruslan Gritsan, Russia and Jussi Laurila, Finland – have enjoyed podium placings on both days.

Junior champions at Middle distance are Eeva-Liisa Hakala, Finland and Krystof  Bogar, Czech Republic.

Tomorrow is a rest day, and the Championships continue on Friday with the relays.
