World Masters Orienteering Championships: Gold for 12 nations in Long final

Posted on | November 10, 2014 | Category: News

Athletes from 12 different nations won gold medals in the Long Distance final held at Canela, Brazil at the weekend. Nine athletes won gold medals in both the Sprint and the Long races.

The Long race was held in Park Fazenda Da Serra, near Canela, providing physically tough courses on a hot day. Runners competed in 23 classes, but 24 gold medals were awarded as there was a tie for first place in M40, with Nick Barrable GBR and Mikko Väisänen FIN recording the same time. Next-closest finish was in M70 where Brian Ellis CAN won by 1 second over Kalle Johansson SWE, with 3rd-placed Roar Forbord NOR, last year’s winner, just 10 seconds down on the winning time. The oldest competitor by far and the only entrant in M95, Rune Haraldsson SWE, successfully completed his course.

The Brazilian organisers can be congratulated on a very successful event overall, by far the most ambitious undertaking ever for the Brazilian federation and a landmark in the development of orienteering in South America. They were rewarded with an attendance of almost 1600 competitors from 38 different nations and a home gold medal in the Sprint M35 class for Alberto Ev Ironir.
