World Masters Attracts 4,100 Entries

Posted on | July 2, 2006 | Category: News

Wiener Neustadt in eastern Austria is the venue for this year’s World Masters Orienteering Championships at the beginning of July, with more than 4,100 competitors aged from 35 to over 80, running in 5-year-band age classes, entered for the three-day competition.

The WMOC is a big social occasion as well as a top-class orienteering event, and there is a very varied programme of activities alongside the competitions. But the top veterans will be concentrating first on reaching the A-Final in their age class, open to the top 80 from the 2-day qualifying competition – and the higher their qualifying position, the later in the start list they will be in the Final, almost always an advantage because of better runnability in the forest.

The terrain for WMOC this year is moderately hilly, with a lot of open, very runnable land. The competition areas include some complex detailed areas with many contour and rock features.
