World Cup long distance: wins for Minna Kauppi and Marc Lauenstein

Posted on | September 25, 2011 | Category: News

Today’s race on the penultimate weekend of the 2011 World Cup was over long distance, with a chasing start based on Saturday’s middle distance results. First into the finish were Minna Kauppi, Finland, who moved up one place, and Marc Lauenstein, Switzerland whose impressive run moved him up 14 places.

In a gruelling race with winning times a bit longer than estimated, there were some fascinating route choices on some of the longer legs in hilly terrain. Home runner Dana Brozkova pleased the spectators in finishing second, 25 seconds behind Minna Kauppi, and Tove Alexandersson, the promising junior from Sweden, came in third a further 15 seconds down. Fastest run of the day on the women’s course came from Denmark’s Signe Søes; it brought her up from 8th to 4th place.

Marc Lauenstein was the fastest today on the men’s course, completing the 16.7 km course in 101.40. Thierry Gueorgiou, France was second, 23 seconds down and Topi Anjala, Finland third with a fast time which brought him up into the leading group from 18th.

Next weekend the World Cup finals take place with two races in Switzerland.
