World Cup: Billstam and Hubmann take overall wins at Nordic Orienteering Tour

Posted on | June 25, 2011 | Category: News

The final event of World Cup round 1 took place this afternoon in Oslo, Norway. This Middle distance event with a chasing start was also the final competition of the Nordic Orienteering Tour (NORT). Today’s starting order was based on the results of NORT stages 1 and 2 in Porvoo and Gothenburg.

The women’s competition proved to be quite a cliff hanger. Finland’s Merja Rantanen was the first to start the race, and Maja Alm, Denmark, and Annika Billstam, Sweden, had their starts 41 and 47 seconds after the Finn. Rantanen lead the beginning of the race but by the fourth control Billstam and Alm reached her. After the forking section between controls 5 and 13, the group of three continued in the lead but another five runners were now chasing them and soon caught the leading trio. Maja Alm suddenly stopped on the GPS at control 14 but later it turned out she was still in the competition. Soon it became rather evident that the final battle would be between a total of five runners: Rantanen, Billstam, Eliasson, Claesson and Alm, and the group split on the way to the last control. Billstam’s excellent route choice brought her to the lead and she finished as the winner of the 2011 Nordic Orienteering Tour. Rantanen took second place 6 seconds after Billstam, and Eliasson grabbed the third spot on the podium.

In the men’s race, there were four Swiss starting within the first minute: Daniel Hubmann, Matthias Kyburz, Matthias Merz and Matthias Müller. The Norwegian Olav Lundanes started 1:05 after Hubmann. Coming to the fourth control, Hubmann and Merz had created around 50 second’s gap to Kyburz on third place. Forking was used at controls 5 to 18 after which Hubmann and Merz were still in the lead with Lundanes and Hertner around one minute behind. After the third last control Hubmann and Merz split again. Hubmann made a better route choice, managed to hold his lead to the finish, and became champion of the Nordic Orienteering Tour. Merz finished 7 seconds after Hubmann, and Hertner finally beat Lundanes in the battle for third place.
