World Cup action this weekend in Poland

The 2016 World Cup swings into action in Poland this weekend, with a forest Middle Distance race and two urban Sprint competitions making up the programme. The venue – Wroclaw – hosts The World Games in 2017, when orienteering will be one of the 30 participating sports.

Wroclaw is in the south-western part of Poland and is the Event Centre for this weekend’s competitions, which have attracted more than 260 participants from 25 nations. Many of them will be using the races as an important part of their preparation for the European Championships in the Czech Republic, which start just three weeks later. They will also be gaining valuable experience of the kind of terrain they might expect at The World Games.

The curtain-raiser is a Middle Distance race on Saturday at Sobótka, south-west of Wroclaw, starting at 10.00 local time. The terrain is part steep slope, sometimes stony, and part erosion gully-spur terrain with some ravines and deep valleys and masses of intricate contour detail. Runnability and visibility in the area range from very good to poor; both the mind and the body will be well challenged here!

Next up will be the individual Sprint races on Sunday. There is a Qualification race in the morning with two heats for women and two for men: the best 20 from each heat run in the A-Final in the late afternoon. The terrain for the races in an eastern suburb of Wroclaw (Śródmieście) is described as flat urban, with some semi-open land with undergrowth. The A-Finals start at 15.30 local time, with the women’s final to be followed by the men’s.

A Sprint Relay completes the programme on Monday. National teams of 4 runners (at least 2 of them women) run in the order W-M-M-W with each leg having an estimated fastest time of 14-15 minutes. The central area of the small town Trzebnica, north of Wroclaw, is the venue for this race, with the start and finish in the market square.

Full information can be found in Bulletin 4 published on the event website – just one click from the event logo in the column on the right-hand side of the IOF Home Page. Both IOF LiveCenter and the event website will carry live pictures and GPS tracking from the races along with a live results service.

This year’s World Cup will be staged in four countries – Poland, then the Czech Republic (European Orienteering Championships) from 21 to 27 May, Sweden (World Orienteering Championships) 20-25 August and Switzerland (World Cup Finals) from 14 to 16 October. The individual World Cup consists of 10 competitions in all, with the final standings counted as the best 7 scores from the first 8 competitions plus the scores from competitions 9 and 10 (the World Cup Final races). There is a trophy cup and prize money of 1,000€ for the women’s and men’s overall winners. The Sprint Relay World Cup has 4 competitions, one at each of the four venues, with a trophy for the winning nation.
