Told to win

Posted on | February 26, 2007 | Category: News

Eduard Khrennikov made a marvellous race at the start of the World Championships in Ski Orienteering and took his tenth gold medal. It was as if he was told to win.

– My boss said that if I didn’t take gold it wasn’t good. Silver wasn’t interesting, he smiles.

The 33 year old Russian now has five gold medals both from individual races and relay.

– The first gold from both individual and relay are the best, but it’s also good to win now, he smiles.

The Russian admits that the victory was a bit of revenge after Tomas Löfgren won all gold medals at the European Championship last year – that was also in Russia. The Swede came sixth, beaten by 59 seconds. Among the four best were three Russians. Vadim Tolstopyatov made it a double for Russia. 13 seconds separated the first two. Finn, Staffan Tunis, took the bronze.

– It was expected that the Russians would do well. They are good and have, of course, prepared well for the competition. You feel comfortable on home ground, he says.

Khrennikov was the big favourite who did was what expected. He was fast on the skis and made no mistakes.

– It was very, very fast and interesting orienteering. Sometimes I took long route choices to use bigger tracks instead of going shorter on smaller tracks, says Khrennikov.

– Are you better than ever now?

– I wouldn’t say so. At the end of last year I had a bad cold for a month. I was only able to start skiing at the beginning of January, he says.

Anyway he has the experience and he knows what to do and he did it again today.

– And the boss wants more gold of course?

– For me one is ok, smiles Eduard.
