The World Games: -I got the gold I wanted

Posted on | July 18, 2009 | Category: News

There was no doubt today about who was going to win among the men. Daniel Hubmann was 33.2 seconds faster than second-best Dmitriy Tsvetkov, and the Swiss got the individual gold that has been his big ambition.

-The World Games is only every fourth year. It is also a big multi-sport event, so it’s really big to get the individual gold. The middle distance was my last chance to get it here in Taiwan, smiles Daniel.

Four years ago Daniel also won gold at The World Games, when he and his team-mates won the relay. Yesterday he was just 1.6 seconds from winning the individual gold in the sprint.

Mentally tough competition

The Swiss star navigated today really well and felt good throughout in the middle distance, held at Chengcing Lake just outside Kaohsiung city. -I had no problems technically, but it was tough. Especially mentally when I was running on the roads and had to push hard, says Daniel.

The other medals were taken by two Russians, Tsvetkov and Andrey Khramov. Khramov has now won individual bronze and gold medals at these Games.

Lithuania had two among the eight best as well as Russia. Simonas Krepsta was seventh and Jonas Vytautas Gvildys eighth.

The relay takes place tomorrow and Switzerland will be defending their title. This will be Hubmann’s second-last race before the World Championships in Hungary, which is now only four weeks away. -I will only run a sprint at home in Switzerland before the World Championships, he says. At World Championships he will take part in all race formats.
