The World Games: Gold medals to Matthias Kyburz and Helena Jansson

The World Games Middle distance competitions were held in Trzebnica, Poland today. Matthias Kyburz, Switzerland, took his fourth World Games gold and Helena Jansson, Sweden, won what turned out to be a tight women’s race.

Swiss Matthias Kyburz had a strong start to catch up Sweden’s Gustav Bergman and had a lead of over a minute at the half-way stage. He made a 30 second mistake to control 20 on the second part of the course, but his speed through the terrain meant he managed to win his fourth World Games gold.

Matthias Kyburz said: “I really enjoy running here – there’s not the same pressure as with the World Champs. I just go and have fun and the shape is still there after Champs two weeks ago.”

Switzerland also took the second spot, with Florian Howald having a clean and solid run to finish as the silver medallist. Vojtech Kral, Czech Republic, was third, winning his first senior medal.

The women’s middle distance was exciting to the very end. Last starter Natalia Gemperle, Russia, fought for the gold medal until the finish line. The Swede Helena Jansson had a technically very good race and took the win with a margin of three seconds. Gemperle made some small mistakes in the forest, but with her very high speed she challenged Jansson.

Helena Jansson said: “It was so close, but I knew I had done everything I could today. I found it technically very challenging and just some days you have the seconds on your side.”

Swiss Sabine Hauswirth was third, after being able to recover from a mistake at control 10, a depression which was quite difficult to see and caused a lot of mistakes in the women’s race.
