The Swiss Surprise

Posted on | March 2, 2007 | Category: News

Switzerland took bronze after a hard battle on the last leg. That was the big surprise in the relay at the World Championships.

Christian Spörry who skied the last leg was very happy when he finished. He won the battle with Jan Laureman in the fight for the bronze.

– I was a bit stronger in the end and skied well, says Christian.

Christian is in his second year in the senior ranks and is 21 years old. Christian Hohl who skied the first leg is 30 years old and Boris Fischer on the second leg is 26. In 2000 Boris was world champion in relay for juniors together with his brother Remo and Marc Lauenstein. The year before the three boys took bronze in Bulgaria.

Lauenstein has become a very good orienteer at the senior level and has won silver on the long distance at WOC in both Japan and Denmark.

At the senior level in ski orienteering the country in the Alps has not had as much success compared to the great performances in summer orienteering. Christian Spörry can’t recall a medal for Switzerland in the senior class.

– I hope this medal will now give us more respect in the orienteering family at home in Switzerland, says Christian.

All three men performed well on the relay, but neither Switzerland nor the Czech Republic were supposed to be fighting for a medal when the last leg started because Russia, Sweden and Finland were expected to be the medallists but Staffan Tunis didn’t do as well on the relay as the individual and was passed by both Switzerland and the Czech Republic. The two in the battle for the bronze saw each other quite a lot during the race.

– We saw each other at the beginning of the leg and later we saw each other quite a bit, says Christian.
