The IOF introduces blood testing for haemoglobin control

Posted on | July 22, 2007 | Category: News

The IOF has decided to introduce blood testing for haemoglobin control as part of its anti-doping activities. As a first step, all elite runners participating in the World Cup events in Mjölby, Sweden, on 23 – 25 July 2007 will be tested.

The IOF has engaged Professor Bengt Saltin, who has been a member of the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) expert panel, to organise the blood tests and the analysis of the blood.

The first blood testing will take place on Sunday 22 July, and the following three days a repeat testing will be performed before the start and just after the finish on 40 runners on Monday 23 July and on 60-70 runners on Tuesday 24 July and Wednesday 25 July.

In several sports, testing of athletes’ haemoglobin concentration in the blood has been a regular procedure since the 1990’s. In some of these sports, specific rules exist in regard to how high the haemoglobin or the haematocrit levels can be in order for the athlete to be allowed to start in an event. At this stage, the IOF has not defined the maximum values. Hence, regardless of which value is recorded, there will be no start prohibitions in this World Cup event. The athletes involved in the testing will be informed about their own values.
