The 2nd World MTB Orienteering Championships: The Charge of the Bike Brigade

Posted on | October 19, 2004 | Category: News

The Ballarat region was first settled by Europeans in the 1850s, around the time of the Crimean War, hence the appearance of names such as Cardigan, Raglan, Balaclava and Sebastopol. Today’s procession through the main streets of Ballarat of the 151 entrants in the 2nd World Mountain Bike Orienteering Championships, bearing the flags of the 26 nations they represent, may have reminded some people of the infamous charge of the Light Brigade.

After the opening ceremony, including words of welcome from local dignitaries, those dignitaries were introduced to the sport of mountain bike orienteering with a short course using the paths of Victoria Park.
