This week the European Ski Orienteering Championships (ESOC) and the World Masters Ski Orienteering Championships will be taking place in the ski resort of Lenzerheide in Switzerland. All five ESOC races will have live video and GPS tracking and a live results service viewable on the internet.

The best athletes in the ski orienteering world have gathered in Lenzerheide to compete for the medals in three individual races – Sprint, Middle and Long – and two relays – the traditional Relay and the Mixed Sprint Relay for teams of two including at least one woman. Nations can enter 2 Relay and 3 Sprint Relay teams.

The races are centred on the biathlon area at Lenzerheide, which is an alpine area with flat parts, forest and some open fields at an altitude of 1350-1500 metres. A few days ago, snow conditions in Lenzerheide were reported as poor for the time of year but OK for racing within the planned area, but yesterday there was a heavy snowfall.

Some very intense and open competition is anticipated in this first major event of the skiO season, and it will be particularly fascinating to see how well Sweden’s foot orienteering star Tove Alexandersson, fresh from her three World Cup victories in the summer heat of Tasmania, adjusts to the winter conditions of Switzerland.

Reports and leading results will be posted on this website after each race.
