Sweden dominant in World Cup relays

Sweden led throughout in the relay races today in the final round of the Ski Orienteering World Cup at Boden, Sweden. Their women finished 2.24 ahead of Norway, whilst the men were 50 seconds in front of Finland. Russia retains top position overall in both the women’s and the men’s class.

Sweden’s women had a very strong line-up with Kajsa Richardsson on first leg, Josefine Engström on second and Tove Alexandersson on third. Russia with Polina Malchikova were just behind Sweden at the end of the first leg, but Norway took over second place on the second leg and held the position comfortably at the end. Russia ended in third place, 4.45 slower than Sweden. Finland 2 was fourth.

Martin Hammarberg gave Sweden a strong start in the men’s class, with Norway changing over shortly behind. Peter Arnesson continued Sweden’s good form on the second leg with Finland coming up into second place, and this was the position also at the finish with Erik Rost holding off the challenge from Staffan Tunis. Norway finished third, 1.11 down on Sweden, and Russia was fourth, 3.01 down.

Friday is a rest day, and the final round continues on Saturday with a middle distance race.
