Ski orienteers head for Austria, Sweden and Japan

The ski orienteering season has already begun with several World Ranking Events held in November and December. The new year kicks off this weekend with World Masters Ski Orienteering Championships in Postalm, Austria. However, it is not only the masters that compete in Austria, as the WMOC is held in conjunction with the new Ski-O Tour: six competitions in eight days in Austria, Italy and Switzerland.

The world’s best ski orienteers and juniors take part in the Ski-O Tour, which begins on Saturday 10 January. Altogether 217 athletes will compete in the World Masters, and 164 in the Ski-O Tour Elite classes.

This year’s Junior World Ski Orienteering Championships take place in Orsa Grönklitt, Sweden, 25 January – 1 February. The competition centre is a cross-country skiing centre with extensive extra trails specially made for ski orienteers. The European Youth Ski Orienteering Championships and Open Nordic Championships will be held concurrently.

In March, the best ski orienteers in the world meet in Rusutsu, Japan, to compete in the World Championships. The weather should be perfect for ski orienteering: in the beginning of March, the temperature is normally between 0 and -10 degrees, and there is 150-300 cm of snow in Rusutsu.

The World Championships terrain consists of different types of forests and open areas. The competition area is partly flat and partly hilly with big altitude differences. Open areas are mainly on golf courses, and the dominant forest type is deciduous forest. The visibility is good nearly everywhere.

The bulletins 1-3 of all these championships can be found on the IOF homepage under “Events”.
