Ski Orienteering World Cup: Sprint Standings after two rounds

Posted on | February 25, 2012 | Category: News

Four of the seven races that count for the Sprint World Cup have now taken place – two in USA and two in Ukraine. The Sprint World Cup standings are calculated from the results of the individual Sprint races and the Mixed Sprint relays, from which both members of the two-person teams gain equal points depending on the team’s final race position. So if a team wins a Sprint relay, both team members get 20 points that are counted in the Sprint World Cup. Members of the second-placed team both get 19 points, and so on. Only the three best-placed teams from each nation (six teams can be entered per nation) count for points.

Josefine Engström leads the women’s standings after winning this week’s individual Sprint and taking a second and a third place in the two Mixed Sprint relays. Polina Malchikova is in second place, and third place is shared by Sonja Mörsky and Tove Alexandersson. Tove has competed in only three events and was first-placed in two of them and in second place in the other.

Victory in this week’s individual Sprint has contributed to Staffan Tunis’s leading position in the men’s standings. Peter Arnesson had a relatively poor race there but was first-placed in the two contributing USA races, and is second in the standings. Andrey Grigoriev, in the winning team in this week’s Mixed Sprint relay, is third.

Two of the remaining three contributing races take place in the coming week in Kazakhstan. At the end of the season it is the best 5 scores out of 7 that count.
