Ski Orienteering World Cup relay: Tough battle on last leg

Posted on | February 15, 2010 | Category: News

Third World Cup round ended on Sunday with relay in Miercurea Ciuc, Romania. In the women’s class it was a tough battle on the last leg between Helene Söderlund (SWE) and Natalia Tomilova (RUS). The Swede was the strongest in the end.

-I felt I had more power to use on the skis during the race, Helene says. She and Tomilova were racing together for much of the leg. At one point Helene set up a little gap from the Russian, but then Natalia made a better route choice and got in front again.

-It looked a long way up the hill to the spectator control and at that stage I didn’t think I could catch her up, but just before the control I managed to pass her and then I was pretty sure I could manage to come first to the finish. It was easy orienteering at the end of the course and I had read the map of that part of the race earlier on, she says.
