Ski Orienteering World Cup: Reenaas and Taivainen win Ultra-long Final

Posted on | March 17, 2010 | Category: News

Marte Reenaas, Norway and Olli-Markus Taivainen, Finland were the winners in today’s World Cup Final held in Ånn, Sweden. Reenaas had a comfortable 40-second victory over home competitor Helene Söderlund, with the junior from Norway Barbro Kvåle in third place. Natalya Tomilova, Russia, overall leader in the standings, came fourth. With double points applying to this final race, this means that she takes the title from Reenaas by just 4 points.

Taivainen bounced back from a spell of indifferent results, but had to work very hard for victory today, finishing just 1.1 seconds quicker than team-mate Staffan Tunis. Eduard Khrennikov, Russia was in third place a further 42 seconds down. Khrennikov finishes the World Cup season with an overall lead of 87 points with Tunis taking overall second place ahead of Andrey Grigoriev, Russia who finished 9th today.

Today’s race was the first ultra-long race in World Cup history; the women’s course length was 22 km and the men’s 33.5 km.
