Ski Orienteering World Cup moves on to Kazakhstan

Posted on | February 28, 2012 | Category: News

This week the third round of the 2012 World Cup in ski orienteering takes place in Kazakhstan. The events are also billed as the 1st Asian Ski Orienteering Championships, and will be regarded too as a ‘Pre-World Championships’, since the 2013 World Championships will be staged in Kazakhstan.

The venue is the Burabay National Park, in the northern part of Kazakhstan between the cities of Shchuchinsk and Borovoye. There will be 4 races: a Sprint on Wednesday, Long distance with interval start on Thursday, Mixed Sprint relay on Saturday and Middle distance with mass start on Sunday.

The terrain, between 300 and 950 m above sea level, is described as 90% forest, mostly pine with good visibility, with a dense network of tracks and paths. Large rock outcrops are a noteworthy feature of the area. The Sprint and Middle races will use areas with relatively few permanent tracks but a lot of narrow paths; the Mixed Sprint relay and Long races use areas with a greater number of wider tracks.

Most of the competitors in Kazakhstan have just completed a quite tiring week of competition in Ukraine; some performances in the final long distance event there were weakened because of fatigue. So it will be interesting to see if full recovery has been achieved in the two rest days which of course include the journey to the new venue.

Reports and leading results will as usual appear on this home page after each race.
