The first relay event of the 2013-14 World Cup, being held at Ylläs, Finland, ended with a convincing victory for the Finnish team of Milka Leppäsalmi and Staffan Tunis. They finished 13 seconds in front of Sweden, with Russia third.

This was a Mixed Sprint Relay where two-person teams, 1 woman and 1 man, ski six legs in all in the order w-m-w-m-w-m. At the end of the first leg, Tove Alexandersson, Sweden led by 3 seconds from Finland 2’s Sonja Mörsky with many other teams close behind. Then on the second leg Staffan Tunis took a grip on the race to set up a lead which was never breached; the Finnish team led for the rest of the race but were continually challenged by the leading Swedish team, in which Erik Rost partnered Tove Alexandersson.

It was 1 minute and 14 seconds after Erik Rost finished his final tour that third place was decided, and it went to Russia 2, Tatyana Rvacheva and Andrey Lamov. Russian teams also took fourth and fifth places, and Norway were sixth.

The women’s courses were 2.3 km long and the men’s 3.1 km, so the total distance of the race was 16.2 km on terrain described as “gentle fell”, with forest and marsh and a network of ski tracks.
