Home victory for Kazakhstan in Sprint

On a sunny but cold (-20°C) morning, home supporters were warmed by being able to celebrate victory for their own ski orienteering queen, Olga Novikova, in World Cup Sprint. She committed Sweden’s Tove Alexandersson to her first defeat in this international season, beating her by 1.4 seconds.

All the competitors enjoyed the fine skiing conditions and the technical courses with many small trails and route choices. Quite a lot of the top names made mistakes today, but the two winners, Olga Novikova and Andrey Grigoriev, Russia, had near-perfect races.  

In the women’s race third place went to Josefine Engström, continuing her fine season. The rapidly improving Bulgarian Stanimir Belomazhev was second in the men’s race, 8.6 seconds down on Grigoriev, and another relatively new name, Norway’s Hans Jørgen Kvåle, was third, 9.3 seconds down on the winner.

The Kazakhstan round continues with a Long distance race with interval start.
