IOF Ski Orienteering World Cup: first wins to Oborina and Nordberg

Posted on | November 27, 2015 | Category: News

Tatyana Oborina, Russia and Ulrik Nordberg, Sweden took top honours in the first race of the new World Cup season, a Sprint, in Ylläs, Finland today in perfect weather conditions.

The races were very tight with single seconds separating many placings, but Tatyana Oborina on the women’s course, who was fourth in the Sprint at this year’s World Championships (WSOC), finished with a 7-second lead over her compatriot Mariya Kechkina. The World Champion at Middle Distance, home athlete Milka Reponen, was third, just 1 second further down. The Russian team excelled with four in the top six, including IOF World-ranked number 1, Iuliia Tarasenko, in fourth place. World Sprint Champion Tove Alexandersson, Sweden finished sixth.

Ulrik Nordberg, 10th in the IOF World Rankings, had a slow start and was still only 15th fastest after 3 controls. But after the first control where he was 23rd , he was never below the fastest 8 and led the race from control five to the finish apart from a tiny margin at control eight. However only 1 second separated him from Stanimir Belomazhev, Bulgaria, silver medallist at WSOC, at the finish, and it was just 1 second more down to the ever-green Eduard Khrennikov, Russia in third place. Sprint World Champion Andrey Lamov had a disappointing day finishing eighth, 34 seconds slower than the winner.

Tomorrow’s competition is a Sprint Relay; follow it on IOF LiveCenter!
