Ski Orienteering World Cup, Event 1: Convincing wins for Taivainen and Tomilova

Posted on | January 15, 2010 | Category: News

Olli-Markus Taivainen, Finland and Natalya Tomilova, Russia were the clear winners of the first World Cup event of the year, a mass-start Middle distance race held close to St. Petersburg, Russia.

Taivainen, who won medals in all formats in both the junior and senior World Championships last year, set out his stall for this season in convincing fashion with a victory by 40 seconds over Russian master Eduard Khrennikov. Erik Rost, Sweden, overall winner of the World Cup in 2008, placed third. Taivainen didn’t have it all his own way, however; he was in third position at the end of the first of the three loops of the race, and still third after the second loop where double World Champion Andrei Lamov was leading with Norwegian Lars Moholdt close behind. But Taivainen showed superior strength and fitness on the last loop to finish with a comfortable victory.

Natalia Tomilova, bronze medallist at Middle distance in the 2007 World Championships, returned from a year away from top international competition to ski an impressive race in which she was in the lead at the end of all three loops. The race was effectively settled during the second loop and the order of the first 4 remained the same thereafter. Second-placed was veteran Finn Liisa Anttila, 43 seconds down on Tomilova, and close behind in third place was the Middle distance silver medallist in last year’s World Championships, Helene Söderlund, Sweden.

Tomorrow there will be two races, an individual sprint in the morning and a sprint relay in the afternoon.
