Ski orienteers from 16 nations have gathered to Lake Tahoe region in California, United States, to start the 2012 World Cup. The small city of Truckee in Sierra Nevada mountains hosts the first ever Ski Orienteering World Cup Round that takes place in North America. Exceptionally late winter in Sierra Nevada kept the organisers wary, but a snow storm a week ago secured enough snow and excellent conditions for the event. The races will be mentally and physically very demanding as the races contain a lot of route choices and climbing on a high altitude of 1900-2300 amsl.

The start list for the World Cup events is strong. Four individual World Champions: Polina Malchikova (RUS), Tove Alexandersson (SWE), Alexander Grigoriev (RUS) and Staffan Tunis (FIN) from last year’s World Championships in Sweden are present as well as the Russian team that won the first ever World Championship title in Mixed Sprint Relay. The start field in men’s class is particularly strong: 16 out of 20 best ranked ski orienteers in the world are present in Tahoe.

The World Cup Round will start with a Long Distance Mass Start race at Tahoe Donner Cross Country Center on Monday, January 30th, followed by a Sprint race on Wednesday, February 1st, a Middle Distance race on Thursday, February 2nd, and exciting Mixed Sprint Relay on Friday, February 3rd.

Event Director Tony Pinkham (to the right) and Course Setter Greg Walker welcome the ski orienteers to Sierra Nevada.
