Simone and the younger runners inspire each other

Simone Niggli took her 20th WOC gold today; Ines Brodmann and Judith Wyder took their first. Together they inspire each other.

“It’s nice to run with Ines and Judith. It’s a good team”, Simone says. She is 34 years old and has been in the business for a very long time. Ines is 27 and Judith 24.

“It’s great to have a runner like Simone on the last leg”, Ines says. “And it’s inspiring to have her in the team. We are learning from her and both getting better through having the best in the world in the team”, Judith says.

 Great start

Ines and Judith ran great races on the first two legs, and Simone ran out on the last leg at a very high speed just 41 seconds behind leading Sweden. They had Tove Alexandersson, the final-year junior, on the last leg.

 – How was it to start first of all?

“I was a bit nervous, but not too much”, Tove says.

 Never looked back

At the first control Tove made a little mistake. Simone saw her miss and ran ahead. For the rest of the race the Swiss star was totally alone, even though Tove also ran a very good race and secured silver for Sweden. Sweden has won medals in the woman’s class at every WOC since the beginning.

On her way to her 20th gold Simone just picked control after control and only looked in one direction. “I didn’t look behind me”, she smiles.
