Several double golds at World Masters Championships

Posted on | July 10, 2008 | Category: News

Seven competitors at this year’s World Masters Orienteering Championships, held recently in Portugal, won gold medals in both the sprint and the long distance events. This is the first year that a sprint race has been included in the programme.

Three ladies achieved the feat: Gunvor Göranson SWE in W75, Astrid Andersson SWE in W85 and Elizabeth Brown GBR in W90. In the men’s classes, two of the double golds went to former World Championship gold medallists: Allan Mogensen DEN, World Champion in the USA in 1993, in M40 and Sigurd Dæhli NOR, a member of the 1981 winning relay team, in M55. Rune Rådeström SWE in M65 and Peo Bengtsson SWE in M75 were the other two.

The biggest win in classes with many competitors was that of Sigurd Dæhli who won M55 by 5.38. This year there were no very tight finishes, the closest being in M85 where Åke Svensson won by a margin of 31 seconds.
