Second win for Alexandersson in Orienteering World Cup

In overcast conditions Swedish world number 1 Tove Alexandersson put in another dominating performance in the 4 km Middle Distance race of Round 1 of the IOF World Cup at Coles Bay, Tasmania. to take victory by a resounding margin of 2.38 from Norway’s world number 9, Mari Fasting with her Swedish team mate Maria Magnusson a further 1.24 back in 3rd.

In the men’s race, world number 2, the Swiss Daniel Hubmann, emerged victorious over reigning Middle Distance World Champion and world number 1, Olav Lundanes of Norway. Hubmann completed the tough 5.2 km course in a time of 31.48 to be a comfortable 55 seconds ahead of Lundanes. Hubmann’s team mate and world number 5, Matthias Kyburz followed up from his victory in last Saturday’s Sprint in Launceston to take 3rd place, 39 seconds adrift of Lundanes. It was a dominant performance by the Swiss men, with Florian Howald repeating his 4th place effort in the Sprint and Andreas Rueedlinger in 5th.

Tasmania’s Hanny Allston was the best placed Australian in 18th place in a time of 42.12 in the women’s race. Allston, like many competitors on the day, lost significant time on the challenging second leg of the course.

Today’s race was also an opportunity for Oceania region orienteers to qualify for an individual place in the 2015 World Championships in Middle Distance to be held in Scotland in early August. It was the New Zealand duo of Lizzie Ingham and Matt Ogden who took Oceania region honours and a World Championships spot with a 12th and 13th place respectively.

The third and final race of Round 1 of the IOF World Cup in Tasmania will be the Long Distance race on Saturday , 10 January.

WOMEN, 4.0km: T Alexandersson (SWE) 29m40s, M Fasting (NOR) 32m18s, M Magnusson (SWE) 33m42s.
