In 2012 Daniel Hubmann missed the World Championships (WOC) on home ground due to injuries and surgery. Now he feels he is getting back to the good old level.

In the Middle distance final today the Swiss star ran very fast and navigated perfectly. “It was a lot about running and pushing hard. The navigation wasn’t that difficult”, he says.

The course was 7.9 kilometres long with 22 controls. Hubmann used 32 minutes 23 seconds. That’s just over four minutes per kilometre as the crow flies. Incredible!

This was Hubmann’s first international gold for three years. The Sprint at WOC in France in 2011 was his last victory. “Now I am really back in business”, he smiles. Well also last autumn he impressed a lot in fighting for the overall World Cup victory. From August last year he could train normally again after a 15-month period with initially no running and then gradually more. “Now I feel I am back in my old shape. My fitness is very good”, he says.

– How is your level compared with before the injuries?

“I can’t say I am better. I was on a very good level also before. And it isn’t so easy to compare”.

He has enjoyed very good training during the winter time and he feels he is now getting the rewards of that. The goal for the year is to fight for medals at both EOC and WOC.
