Orienteering World Cup 2018 without an O-Ringen round

Posted on | October 31, 2016 | Category: News

The International Orienteering Federation (IOF) and O-Ringen AB have together decided to not include O-Ringen as one of the World Cup rounds in 2018, as was previously announced.

– When we looked at the feedback we received from the athletes and coaches it became clear that even with a reduced program, the O-Ringen World Cup round would conflict too much with the World Orienteering Championships, commented Tom Hollowell, IOF CEO.

The decision was taken after careful consideration of the feedback received from athletes and coaches. The O-Ringen round was due to be organised one week prior to the World Orienteering Championships in Latvia. Instead the World Orienteering Championships in Latvia will be included as a round of the Orienteering World Cup in 2018, such as been the case in previous years. The previously announced rounds in Switzerland in May and Norway at the beginning of September are not affected by this change. Investigations are being made about potentially adding a fourth round to the 2018 World Cup program, but this will only be done with the agreement of all stakeholders.

– We apologize to the athletes and national teams for any distress this has caused in their planning, but feel it is better to admit, now rather than later, that we were too ambitious in moving along with the future World Cup program, continued Tom Hollowell.

The organisation Swiss Cup, who for 7 of the past 8 years has organised the successful World Cup Final will also join the World Cup consortium in 2019.  The long-term cooperation between the IOF, O-Ringen and the Swiss Cup organisation, will now focus on formulating the World Cup program from 2019 and going forward.

The program of the Orienteering World Cup 2018:

Round 1 6-13 May Lugano, Switzerland (in connection with the European Orienteering Championships
Round 2 4-11 August Riga, Latvia (In connection with the World Orienteering Championships)
Round 3 31 August – 2 September Østfold, Norway
