New World Cup triumph for Simone Niggli

Posted on | October 3, 2010 | Category: News

A tight victory over Helena Jansson secured Simone Niggli another World Cup triumph in the hilly limestone forests of Haute Savoire, France today. She leads the standings by 310 points, an unassailable margin with two races to go. Thierry Gueorgiou enjoyed an emphatic victory by over 5 minutes on home ground.

Helena Jansson was fastest by more than 2½ minutes at one point on the course, but Simone’s steadiness in the terrain, often stopping in order to take in all the map detail in the very intricate terrain with often low visibility and runnability, proved decisive in the end. She won by 21 seconds. These two were almost 6 minutes ahead of 3rd placed Tone Wigemyr who made a very impressive World Cup debut for Norway.

France’s men got 3 runners in the top 6 as they set out their stall for good World Championship results on similar French terrain next year. Thierry Gueorgiou was supreme, completing the 13.6 km course in 92:53. Matthias Müeller took second place and Olav Lundanes third. Müeller closed the gap between himself and Daniel Hubmann (recovering from injury) to 144 points ahead of the two final races in Switzerland.

The next race, on Saturday, is over middle distance in the vicinity of Geneva. Next day is the PostFinance Sprint, the final race in the 2010 World Cup.
