MTB Orienteering World Cup: second win for Emily Benham

Posted on | July 19, 2014 | Category: News

Great Britain rider Emily Benham is on a roll! Today she won a World Cup race for the second day in succession, this time the Sprint by the close margin of 3 seconds. Lauri Malsroos, Estonia was the winner of the men’s race with a 30-second lead.

The Sprint, held in the outskirts of the city of Kristianstad in southern Sweden, was the second of three World Cup races being held in conjunction with this year’s O-Ringen – the 50th anniversary of this famous event. Emily Benham did not take the obvious route to control 1 – but after that she really got into gear and emerged victorious by 3 seconds over Ingrid Stengård, Finland. Home rider Cecilia Thomasson was third, 17 seconds slower than the winner. Notably, the six top positions were filled by riders from six different nations.

The victory of Malsroos in the men’s race was by the bigger margin of 30 seconds. Hans Jørgen Kvåle, Norway was second and Jiri Hradil, Czech Republic third. It was a good day for Estonia, Tonis Erm taking fourth position.

The final race in this round is the Long distance, to be held on a large area with many mountain bike routes and ski trails north-west of Kristianstad.
