The 47th Military World Championships, organized by the Austrian military under the auspices of the Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM), are being held at Güssing, 150 km south of Vienna. 264 competitors from 29 nations are taking part in the event which consists of Middle and Long Distance individual races and a relay. Quite a number of elite orienteers are military personnel, so many well-known names appear in the start lists. The races count towards IOF World Ranking points.

In both Middle and Long races there have been 80 women and 184 men taking part. The Middle race produced Yulia Novikova and Matthias Kyburz as champions, the former winning by 18 seconds from the Lithuanian Sandra Pauzaite and the latter by 40 seconds from local hero Gernot Kerschbaumer, who was Long Distance champion in 2011 in Brazil.

Natalia Efimova won the Long Distance race by 1.02 with Annika Rihma, Estonia taking the silver medal. Fabian Hertner, Switzerland was silver medallist in the men’s race, 1.32 slower than Kyburz, with Russian Andrey Khramov in bronze medal position.
