Finnish Marika Teini won the European Orienteering Championships Middle distance and took her first individual championships gold medal after an exciting competition. In the men’s competition the reigning champion Matthias Kyburz won the fourth EOC gold of his career.

The women’s competition was a drama. Swedish Tove Alexandersson was in the lead through almost the entire course but after a mistake on the second last control she lost the victory. Last starter Swiss Julia Gross finished with the fastest time, but was disqualified after missing a punch. This meant that Finnish Marika Teini was the winner with 35.44. Tove Alexandersson was second, only eight seconds behind Teini, and the young Swiss athlete Simona Aebersold took the bronze.

It was Switzerland on both gold and silver position in the men’s race. Reigning EOC Middle distance champion Matthias Kyburz won after a solid race, 1.10 ahead of his team mate Florian Howald. Olav Lundanes, Norway, was third.
