Leho Haldna: Great Start for IOF Team

Posted on | January 27, 2017 | Category: Newsletter

Each year, IOF Council and Commission meetings have traditionally been held during the third weekend in January, and so this year we met in Warsaw, Poland. The IOF organisation is bigger than ever, because we have one new commission, our temporary Ethics Commission, and our Environment Commission has increased in membership for 2017. The Environment Commission has been inactive for some years, and we hope that now, under the new chairman Einar Tommelstad, the Environment Commission will contribute a lot, as there is an immeasurable field of work for Einar and his commission. It has become even more popular to work in IOF Commissions. The IOF has recently received many applications, and has had to make a careful selection of new members. All together we have 25 new commission members. In our organisation, we now have 72 commission members, 11 Council members and 5 Office employees. Our team has nearly 90 members from 29 countries.

During the long weekend, most of the Commissions had face to face meetings, as well as meetings between Commissions, but the highlight was a Joint meeting of IOF Commissions and Council. The main topic of the Joint Meeting was preparation of the IOF Strategic Plan for the years 2018-2024. Part of our meeting also consisted of group work, where Commission and Council members made proposals on IOF Vision, Strategic Plan, Key Goals, Actions etc.  I’ve seen a lot of group work, but this was probably the best group work ever in IOF history. The groups really enjoyed the teamwork, and the proposals and ideas were excellent. The next important milestone in the process of creating the new IOF Strategic Plan is the IOF President’s Conference during WOC 2017, where a new draft, based on input from member federations, commissions and Council, will be presented.

We have a lot of clever and enthusiastic people in our organisation, this is not a secret. The challenge for the President and Council is to steer everyone towards the same goals, and to implement together the decisions of the IOF General Assembly. In 2016, a positive decision was made by the IOF General Assembly on the international competition programme, and now it is time for implementation. It is not up to the IOF Commissions or Council to make any changes to this decision, rather it is our job to implement and see to the results of the decision.

As we go forward, we need to increase cooperation between IOF Commissions, Council and Office, and it is important to always remember to consult and communicate with stakeholders and target groups, such as Member Federations, athletes etc. During our meetings in Warsaw we finalised commission remits, including working methods and allocated responsibility areas inside IOF. Now it’s time to get to work and deliver results. The IOF voluntary organisation and Office together have a lot of excellent resources, but also some resources which are not developed to their full potential. In order to use all our resources in the most effective way we need to work together as one team: the IOF team.

Finally, I wish you all a successful and active orienteering year!
//Leho Haldna, IOF President
