Lauri Nenonen found a good rhythm

The Finn Lauri Nenonen broke a ski in the middle distance race in the Junior Championships. On the Long there was no problem at all: the final-year junior got the gold.

“I found a good rhythm without stress and made no big mistakes, and think I found good route choices”, says Lauri. Already after the first of the three loops the 19-year-old athlete was in front, but he had no big margin to the Swede Ulrik Nordberg. They were in a class of their own, and had a hard fight for the gold. After 14.9 km and 36 controls there was just 16 seconds between them.

“On the last loop Ulrik was in front of me for a while”, says Lauri. But the Finn got back in front and also had time for a small mistake just before finishing for the gold. The winner is from Imatra in the eastern part of Finland, quite close to Russia.

“Why am I doing well? Good training. Last year it was about 600 hours”, says Lauri, who is now in the army and therefore has good opportunities for training.

Toumas Kotro, also from Finland, took bronze but was 4.20 behind the winner. That’s nearly one kilometre, distance-wise. So the two best really were outstanding.
