JWOC Middle Final: gold medals to Finland and Norway

Posted on | July 7, 2015 | Category: News

Middle Distance Champions after today’s races are Anine Ahlsand, Norway and Olli Ojanaho, Finland. Both won by a margin of 14 seconds.

The women’s race was a close-run affair with the top six having finish times within a minute of each other. 18-year-old Anine Ahlsand, on home ground, enjoyed a clear victory over Johanna Oberg, Sweden. Sandrine Mueller, Switzerland, who was a heat winner yesterday, was three seconds slower than Oberg to take bronze. Both Norway and Sweden had two athletes in the top 6, but Sara Hagstrom, who had the biggest lead by far in her qualification heat, could only manage 11th place today, 3.01 down on the winner.

Olli Ojanaho, bronze medallist at this distance last year, was a heat winner yesterday and repeated his impressive form on today’s course. Erik Andersson, Sweden, also a heat winner, took the silver medal. Bronze went to the Swiss athlete Sven Hellmuller who finished 1.03 down on the lead time. Norway had two athletes in the top six in this race too.

Tomorrow is a rest day and competition resumes on Thursday with the Long Distance race, based at Rauland Ski Centre.
