Junior World Ski Orienteering Championships: Young Finn wants to beat the seniors as well

Posted on | February 2, 2009 | Category: News

Olli-Markus Taivainen took four out of four golds at JWOC in ski orienteering. Now his goal is the ski orienteering WOC for seniors in Japan in March.

-You want more medals in Japan, Olli-Markus?

-I hope to be part of the Finnish team there. The team will be selected after the upcoming weekend. If I do well now, I think there are possibilities to do well in Japan as well, he says.

The junior has competed against seniors earlier this winter and done well. On the world ranking list, he is 14th at the moment. Only two Finns are higher ranked than he is, so it looks good for a trip to Japan.

The 19-year-old athlete won three individual golds in Orsa in Sweden, and had the last leg in the winning team in the relay. Olli-Markus started on the last leg just after the Norwegian Hans Jørgen Kvåle. The Finn attacked from the start and left all his competitors. He was fastest of everybody in the relay, but his team mates Leo Laakkonen and Taneli Pantsar also performed well.

-Why are you doing so well, Olli-Markus?

-I trust my condition. I’m good at both skiing and orienteering. I have trained and prepared well and have rested enough.

The relay was the last competition at the Junior World Ski orienteering Championships in Orsa Grönklitt, Sweden. In the men’s class, Norway took silver fourth time in a row, and the bronze went to Russia.
