Junior World Ski Orienteering Championships: Tough fight but victory for Norway

Posted on | February 7, 2011 | Category: News

Barbro Kvåle had a tough fight with the Finn Marjut Turunen at the end of the last leg, but she was the strongest in the final spurt for the line.

“And this gold is almost nicer to win than an individual gold”, Barbro says. The Norwegian really knows the feeling of winning on her own. She won the long distance earlier in the championships and also took two individual golds last year.

Audhild Bakken Rognstad, from Lillehammer close to the race venues, and Anna Ulvensøen were the two other in the Norwegian team. Ulvensøen is studying at the ski orienteering gymnasium in Mora in Sweden, which has a lot of good athletes.

In the men’s class it was a big triumph for Sweden. Anchor Daniel Svensson thinks that the reason for the success is just the daily life in Mora. “We are a large group of athletes who encourage each other in training and also have a lot of fun”, he says.

It was a close race between Barbro Kvåle and Marjut Turunen coming to the finish line.
