Junior World Ski Orienteering Championships: The unexpected gold

Posted on | February 11, 2010 | Category: News

Before the race, Barbro Kvåle hadn’t been thinking about winning at all. She expected that the gold medal would go to one of the older competitors in her class.

-I have still two years more as a junior, and thought in advance that some of the older girls would fight for the gold. It’s really nice to win and this is the biggest thing that has happened to me in sport, the Norwegian says.

Barbro’s team mate Marie Asprusten won silver, and Norway had two more girls among the six best. There are a lot of good female juniors in Norway, who are pushing each other hard.

The winner is 17 years old, but already at her third Junior World Championships in ski orienteering. In her first Junior World Championships she was in the Norwegian team that took a medal in the relay. Barbro comes from Brandbu, about 100 kilometres north-east of Oslo, and has practised a lot of sport. She is also doing very well in cross-country skiing. The reason to her success is a lot of practice and a lot of training. She trains about 500 – 550 hours this year.
