Tatiana Medvedeva is the new golden girl from Russia. She won long distance in the Junior World Ski Orienteering Championships, and got the gold she was only three seconds away from in the sprint.

-Sport is my life. Sport and studies take my time and I aim to the Russian national team for seniors and to the international championships on senior level, says Tatiana.

She won the long distance 17 seconds ahead of the Swede Tove Alexandersson. In the sprint, the 19-year-old Russian was number two, only three seconds behind the winner Maria Nordström.

-I’ve been training hard for this season and the gold is the best result I can get of that work, she says.

Tatiana lives in Chebazkul in the Chelyabinsk region. She studies management of sport at South Ural State University. Two years ago she won two golds at the European Youth Championships in ski orienteering in Ivanovo, Russia.

This winter, she has been skiing since November, and she is well prepared. She is also getting good advice from her trainers.

-They plan and control my training and keep an eye on my health, she says.

Tatiana has grown into the sport of orienteering. Her parents were active orienteers and brought their daughter into it.

-When I was seven years old, I started to go to competitions with my parents, and my mum followed me in the forest, says Tatiana.

Maria Nordström that got gold on Monday was third on the long distance.

Winner in the junior men’s class was again the Finn Olli-Markus Taivainen. He had a very good race.

-And now your goal is to take all the golds in the championships?

-I have said with a smile that I shall take the four golds.

-Are you tired after two days tough competing?

-No, not at all, he smiles.
