The Swedes are doing extremely well in these championships. They are so well prepared.

“We have been training and preparing for the terrain we are finding here, a lot of tracks very close to each other”, Ola Mopers says. He is chief coach for the national junior team, and teacher and trainer at the gymnasium for ski orienteering in the Swedish city Mora. The gymnasium has a lot of keen athletes, and well prepared training designed to increase the athletes’ standards.

In the individual junior races Sweden won four of the six gold medals. In the middle distance three Swedish men were at the front at the finish. Anton Sjökvist took his first individual gold, after he had won medals other than gold on the two first distances. “In advance I thought my chances were best on the long distance, but the middle race was really good. I lost only ten seconds in mistakes”, he says. Right from the start he was one of the strongest and was in front. “It went very well and I could concentrate on my own orienteering”, he says. The championships in Lillehammer had been Anton’s goal for a long time, and he likes challenges with a lot of tracks and difficult orienteering.

In the women’s race it was another Swedish victory, with Tove Alexandersson taking the gold medal for the second day running. She is studying at an orienteering gymnasium in Sandviken.

For Sweden the championships are providing the best results for many years. “I am not so surprised since we have prepared for just the challenges here, but they are terrific results”, coach Mopers says.
