Junior World Ski Orienteering Championships: double Russian gold in Sprint

Russian athletes were placed first in both women’s and men’s classes in the Sprint today, the winners being Liubov Balandina and Sergey Shalin. In the European Youth Championships, Russians again took both gold medals.

Liubov Balandina enjoyed a particularly impressive victory, winning by 1.23 over Sweden’s Frida Sandberg, the champion at Middle distance and triple gold medallist last year. Another Swede, Isabel Salen was third, and the Swedish team impressed overall with four finishers in the top six.

Sergey Shalin also won by a significant margin; 43 seconds was the difference between his time and that of second-placed Jyri Uusitalo, Finland. Sixten Walheim, Sweden was third.

Aleksandr Pavlenko, Russia won his second gold medal of the Championships today, winning the M17 race by 6 seconds from his arch rival, Vladislav Kiselev. These two have taken first or second place in all three individual races. Winner in W17 was Alexandra Rusakova, Russia by 46 seconds over home athlete Doris Kudre.

The final event of the Championships, the Relay, takes place tomorrow (Sunday).
