Junior World Orienteering Championships: The young and talented Canadian

Posted on | July 8, 2008 | Category: News

At home Emily Kemp competes with the seniors. At the Junior World Orienteering Championships (JWOC), the young Canadian has shown great talent. In the future she wants to be among the very best.

Emily who is from Ottawa is only 16 years old. At home, in Canada, she often runs in the senior class to gain more experience and there are not too many seniors who can match her speed with a map in the forest.

– When I look at the map I can see what the terrain looks like, she says as an explanation of why she is doing so well.

She started orienteering when she was eight years old, with her father and they both got hooked.

– It’s new terrain and new challenges in every race. I like that, she says.

Her goal for the future is to gain a top six result in the individual at JWOC. Right now her results were 33, 38 and 62 among almost 140 athletes. She is in Europe for her first time. JWOC has provided her with a lot of experience in orienteering in Nordic terrain and she will continue the summer with a lot of orienteering, first in Finland, then O-Ringen in Sweden.

– It’s a long way to come here. So it’s good to have some time to look around and take part in different competitions, she says.
