Junior World Orienteering Championships: Jenny gets her revenge

Posted on | July 8, 2008 | Category: News

Jenny Lönnkvist won her second individual gold and exacted revenge on the long distance and the relay. The Swede is a triple JWOC gold champion.

She won the middle at JWOC in Australia last year. She didn’t do so well at the middle this year but she was still able to secure fifth place. She really wanted to win the long distance and she did it.

– I was really eager to show my best, she says. She won in front of her team mate Beata Falk.

During the relay it was a tough battle on the last leg between her and the Dane, Maja Alm. Towards the end of the course, Jenny pushed the speed and established a gap and ran into the finish together with her team mates Beata Falk and Lina Strand. Last year, Jenny fought for the gold with the Norwegian Siri Ulvestad on the way from the last control to the finish line. The Norwegian just won ahead of the Swede. Now it was a clear Swedish victory.

Jenny had problems earlier in the season and was sick for a long time. Towards the end of June she began to feel good. To recover she didn’t do very much orienteering for quite some time. She wanted to be hungry and produce her best.

– I don’t know if I have become so much better at orienteering during the last year but I have gained a lot of more experience, she says.

In some ways last year’s gold was bigger. – When I ran into finish last year I knew that I was winning. I didn’t know that this time, she says.
