Junior World Orienteering Championships – Ida Bobach’s fifth gold medal

Posted on | July 3, 2011 | Category: News

Ida Bobach, Denmark won her fifth Junior World Orienteering Championships gold medal today, retaining her Sprint crown from last year. The men’s gold went to the Frenchman Lucas Basset, who was 13th in the same race last year.

It was a dream start to the Championships for the Danish women’s team, with Emma Klingenberg taking the silver medal just 2.3 seconds behind Ida in the race, held in the Polish town of Lebork. The Czech runner Tereza Novotná finished in bronze medal position a further 9.7 seconds down. New Zealand will be delighted to have achieved a podium placing with Angela Simpson in 6th place.

The men’s silver medal went to Spain, Andreu Blanes finishing 12 seconds down on Lucas Basset. Florian Howald, Switzerland, was just 1.7 seconds behind to take the bronze medal. The home support also had much to cheer, with Michas Olejnik on the podium in 5th place. Unusually, the first-placed Scandinavian runner was no higher than 6th – Eskil Kinneberg from Norway.

Junior World Orienteering Championships continue tomorrow with the long distance race.
