“It’s all about experience”

There is rock everywhere in the JWOC areas. How is it possible to map it? The chief mapper Eric Andrews says it’s all about experience.

The Australian has a lot of experience, but he had in fact retired a long time before this year’s Junior World Orienteering Championships. “I retired in 2003, but I was asked to work on the JWOC maps, and I wanted to do the job. It was a challenge”, he says.

Eric has done three of the four maps that are being used in the JWOC finals; Alex Tarr has made the other map. They are both very experienced in mapping in terrain with granite and boulders.

It looks incredibly difficult to make good maps in the rocky terrain with huge boulders everywhere. Eric says it’s important to get the right experience. He’s got that over the years. “It takes many years to learn how to map the granite terrain”, he says.

Erice has spent a lot of time mapping in the past 17 years. He says he has mapped 570 square kilometres in total. For JWOC and the public competitions that have been organized as part of the big carnival, 11 different maps have been made.

Eric Andrews has made most of the excellent maps at JWOC.
